Anti-Trans Youth Legislation
Why Anti-Trans Laws Are Anti-Science
Forbes, April 22, 2021
A massive wave of anti-transgender bills being signed into law in Republican-led states will make 2021 a record-breaking year for anti-LGBTQ legislation, according to an analysis from the Human Rights Campaign, with the record likely to be broken in coming days.
As of April 2021, eight anti-LGBTQ bills have been signed into law this year, and another 10 have passed legislatures and are awaiting either a governor's approval or veto.
The record for new anti-LGBTQ laws was set in 2015, when 15 laws were enacted (largely focusing on “religious freedom”)—a threshold the Human Rights Campaign, which is the largest LGBTQ advocacy group in the U.S., expects could be overtaken this week.
Anti-trans proposals have massively increased this year, with 115 bills being introduced across at least 30 states, the Human Rights Campaign reported—many of those targeting young people.
At least 66 transgender youth sports bans have been introduced, along with at least 35 bills that would affect medical care for transgender youth, according to the Human Rights Campaign.
The sports proposals would ban athletes from playing school sports for a gender other than what they were assigned at birth, while the medical care bills would largely keep minors from being able to receive treatments and care for gender confirmation surgery.
The number of bills being considered is "unprecedented," Human Rights Campaign president Alphonso David said during a news conference Thursday, and comes amid a rise in violence against transgender Americans.
